A recent surgery has been done through the help of a robot. Dr. David Price, a urologist with Regional Urology LLC in Shreveport, has performeda surgery in Louisiana using advanced robot technology to remove a large kidney stone from a 43-year-old woman. The woman’s condition was complicated by a congenital abnormality known as “horseshoe kidney,” which occurs when the kidneys are fused, forming a single ridge of tissue. This occurs only in about 1 in 400 people worldwide. A result from this abnormality are kidney stones.
Although most people with this condition lead normal lives, surgery poses difficulties since there are potentially serious bleeding complications. According to Price, in the past, this would have meant a large open incision with a two-week hospital stay. By using the robot da Vinci S Robo, the stone was removed with only two tiny incisions, with little blood loss and only a two-day hospital stay. The doctor has two of these systems.
