Electrical goods are an elastic market?

Your first thought is probably no way there are way too many different angels on this to make such a bold statement, the truth is Sales grew by 0.8% last month, helped by big discounts in electrical goods, after a 0.2% fall in December. I’m not saying its PED is 5.0 but I am saying its over 1.0 in my opinion and it’s got to be true electronic goods are a luxury and when people fear a recession its dropped like a brick and the only way to reach that market again is to cut prices greatly and in this case they managed to re-peak the buyers interest with big discounts, in an inelastic market it wouldn’t have changed by so much would it? Hopefully this big increase will stop them from cutting costs or more precisely cutting us our the employed list.

Commercial Bio fuels the future or Publicity stunt?

Since we have all become environment-centric people, businesses have stepped in to claim that they too are thinking about the world, now it seems even the biggest airlines are trying to get publicity, think I lie? A Virgin Atlantic jumbo jet has flown between London’s Heathrow and Amsterdam using fuel derived from a mixture of Brazilian babassu nuts and coconuts. I almost feel like the worlds attempting to play celebrity survivor. Will this new mix of fuel make a difference? No it won’t since babassu nuts need to be from a mature plantation so well be planting a forest full to sustain a fraction of our usage and that means…. Cutting down trees therefore less carbon is absorbed and less oxygen produced don’t seem very smart to me. I’m leaning on the side of publicity stunt anyone else?

Tata and Trinamool

Tata Motors, one of the leading Indian brands in automobiles has been seen in news a lot since the company announced the plans of bringing the concept of the Nano Car to wheels and thus make their design run on the Indian roads. But the West Bengal government does not appears happy with this project as Trinamool issue has cropped up. The Trinamool congress from kolkata simply refused to provide any police cover on permanent basis to the company’s Singur site and told them to abort their actions regarding this issue. Main problem is due to the missing consent to land acquisitions done by the company, from the
farmers who are current owners of the land. The leaders verdict about the problem is that, Tata should be careful of not hurting the sentiments of the localites there. As such the production of the smallest Indian car has been postponed till mid of year 2008. But the
company is constantly looking to grab some production favourable opportunities to start the work as soon as possible and lead the market again.

Es-x10

Casio just came out with the world smallest 10MP digital camera, this thing is incredible. The camera is only 15mm thick, and weighs only 4 ounces without the battery. You can pick up this camera for under $250 and you can choose from four different colors. The camera looks amazing but it will still need to see if it can pass the quality test. It doesn’t come with image stabilization, which is a big thing in most photographers mind. If you’re just using a camera for odd outings and such then this is perfect for you then.

JetBlue says Lufthansa to take 19% stake

Wow, this is amazing. Lufthansa is trying to expand itself, and that’s again acquisition by stake.

Here is the press release

The German carrier (DE:823212: news, chart, profile) is buying 42 million newly issued common shares of JetBlue in a private placement for $7.27 a share, or a total of about $300 million. The purchase price represents a roughly 16% premium to Wednesday’s closing price of $6.25. Lufthansa will get a seat on JetBlue’s board and own 19% of JetBlue’s equity after the share issuance.

Under U.S. law, a domestic airline can have no more than 25% of its voting stock owned by non-U.S. citizens.

The carriers anticipate the transaction will close in the first quarter of 2008. They say it represents the first significant investment by a European air carrier in a U.S. point-to-point air carrier.

The deal represents the first significant investment by a European air carrier in a U.S. point-to-point air carrier.

“Now with a stronger balance sheet and financial flexibility we are well positioned to successfully meet our industry’s challenges, shareholder expectations and continue to be a leader in the markets that we serve,” JetBlue Chief Executive Dave Barger said.

In a call with brokerage analysts, Barger stressed that the deal “was simply a financial transaction” that came about after Lufthansa approached JetBlue management this summer. But he added: “We will see where that can lead to exploring other opportunities.”

Wall Street has been hungry to see airline mergers as operating conditions for the industry have worsened, hammering stock prices. Oil prices have jumped past $92 a barrel, up more than 50% from the start of the year, prompting airlines including Southwest Airlines Co.

Against this background, JetBlue has reshuffled top management and tried to win back customer loyalty threatened by multihour delays last winter and new competition from Virgin America. Earlier Thursday its shares hit a new annual low.

Under the terms of the deal, a Lufthansa nominee will be appointed to JetBlue’s board. The nominee will come up for election at JetBlue’s annual meeting next year.

In a joint statement, the carriers said that they also are looking forward to exploring “potential opportunities for further cooperation,” but had yet to agree on any specific areas to join forces.

“Our investment reflects the confidence we have in JetBlue’s quality, growth potential and management team,” said Lufthansa Group Chairman and Chief Executive Wolfgang Mayrhuber.

JetBlue needs regulatory but not shareholder approval for the deal.

The Forest Hills, N.Y.-based carrier’s shares jumped as high as $8.83 earlier in the session, helping the airline sector reverse earlier losses, after the New York Times reported on its Web site that was in talks to buy a roughly 20% stake of JetBlue. The Amex Airline Index (.XAL:

Fed Lowers Rate by a Quarter Point to 4.25 Percent

The Fed has been “fed” up with the market, and now they’ve decided to cut another staggering quarter point. Do you this will be enough for the economy to be stable?

Well lets see..

The Federal Reserve lowered its benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to 4.25 percent, while signaling officials are open to further cuts if the housing slump and credit squeeze worsen.

Stocks fell and Treasury notes surged after the decision, which some economists said fell short of what’s needed to spur lending and avert a recession. The central bank also pared the discount rate by a quarter point to 4.75 percent, counter to speculation among investors that the Fed would make a deeper reduction.

“Recent developments, including the deterioration in financial market conditions, have increased the uncertainty surrounding the outlook for economic growth and inflation,” the Federal Open Market Committee said in a statement after meeting today in Washington. Lower borrowing costs “`should help promote moderate growth over time.”

The Fed dropped language from its previous statement that risks of slower growth and faster inflation were “roughly” balanced. The economy is faltering after a third-quarter surge as house prices drop, consumer spending slows and banks tighten lending standards for even their best customers.

I don’t think this will raise the economy that much, but it will definitely help.

U.S economy really going down?

As we see the U.S economy to some is either in a recession, or just in a gradual decline? Well, the questions is very debatable, and I heard some good reasons why some say it is and some say it isn’t.

While driving, I flipped the radio and I heard these guys saying that the WallStreet is very upset with the Fed’s decisions, simply because they aren’t being more aggressive. The interest rates are still high, and the housing market is rapidly declining. The market is either going to go up, or down and we’ll know that by this upcoming spring. I think it will still go down due to massive foreclosures, and simple reason: interest rates are high, banks are having a issue with lending.

They said the economy was doing good because the cardboard industry was doing good. They actually had more orders than last year. Pumping about 1.2 billion boxes this year. Every sector uses boxes, so they say its not in a recession.

Let us see what’s next.
